Five Easy Steps to Sprouting with a Victorio four tray crop sprouter:

I recently became interested in sprouting and after researching how to sprout through mason jars and racks, I picked up the Victorio sprouter in hopes that it would be easier and less time consuming (also better drainage). And I wasn’t disappointed.

I’m trying to shift my diet to a less… chocolate and fried snack-aholic’s anonymous diet. And this is a good step in the healthy direction. I also love to garden, but winter just hit here and I don’t want to lose the progress I made adding veggies to my meals. Hence: sprouts!

This sprouter was really easy to use and so far I haven’t had any problems. Let me break it down for you in five easy steps.

  1. MEASURE: If you have small seeds like alfalfa (which this sprouter comes with a small satchel) then measure 1 tablespoon. Use 2 to 3 tablespoons if you are using larger seeds, nuts or beans (I’ve tried lentils, garbanzo, black-eyed peas and sunflower seeds with success! DO NOT DO regular pinto beans. You can try it… but my whole apartment ended up smelling like… beans. And a large portion of them got soggy, it was a mess).
  2. SOAK: Place your seeds in a jar and soak them overnight while you sleep (8-12 hrs).
  3. STRAIN: When you wake up in the morning dump the seeds into one of the trays and pour two cups of water through. The water will pour or drip out of the small holes in the tray. Stack the tray onto the base and strain the seeds every morning when you wake up, and once again before you go to bed.
  4. REPEAT: Wait two to three days and repeat with another tray! That way you’ll always have fresh sprouts that are ready to harvest every couple days!
  5. BACTERIA: There’s a lot of research out there about sprouts and the dangers because of ecoli and certain bacteria. This is an easy fix to ensure that you don’t get any of those nasty invisible horrors on your food. Keep your sprouts in a container in the fridge slightly damp (after you’ve rinsed them) so that they’ll stay crunchy and fresh. Then when you are getting ready to toss them onto your sandwich or what have you, just dip them briefly into a bowl of vinegar. Any kind of vinegar will work. I keep that bowl of vinegar in the fridge as well to reuse over and over, any time I want sprouts, I give them a quick dip and presto, the acidic base in vinegar fries those nasty bacteria alive! So it’s safe for you and your loved ones to enjoy crunch vegetables all year long! Enjoy:)
